Seasonal labour pilot scheme aims to boost post-Brexit horticulture industry

Under the pilot, 2,500 workers from outside the EU will be able to come to the UK each year.It aims ensure the current growth in UK soft fruit production—up 130% in the last 20 years—will continue.Environment Secretary Michael Gove said farmers had put forward ‘powerful arguments about the need for seasonal labour to keep the horticulture industry productive and profitable’.

Defra will review the pilot’s results and ‘look at how best to support the longer-term needs of industry outside the EU’.
